The sequel to the Hollywood comedy-drama The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel, imaginatively titled The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel, follows many of the protagonists from the original. Maggie Smith, Judi Dench and Dev Patel reprise their roles as they lay down the plans for the expansion of the first hotel.
Set in Jaipur, parts of the film were shot in the beautiful Pearl Palace Heritage. The luxury rooms are decorated with traditional art, with special efforts being taken to preserve its original architecture. It was also voted India’s “Most Romantic Hotel” in 2015 by TripAdvisor users.
There’s an interesting story behind how the location was chosen for the movie. According to this news report, the Pearl Palace Heritage’s owner, Satinder Pal Singh, met with the cast while the first Marigold movie was being filmed; they used to dine at his other Jaipur property, Hotel Pearl Palace. When plans for a sequel came up, Singh was approached for the Pearl Palace Heritage.
You can have a more immersive experience than catching the film. The Taj Hotels group has recently announced a two-day guided tour of the locations across Rajasthan that feature in both films. The tour for two costs ₹15,500 and lasts for approximately five hours each day. Spread across Udaipur and Jaipur, the tour includes stops at Castle Kanota which features as the Viceroy Club in the movies, the Janta Bazaar flower market and guided tours of Ravla Khempur, the original Best Exotic Marigold Hotel.
