Come February, Rajasthan’s lake city of Udaipur will shimmy and shake to reggae and flamenco. From Fri February 10 to Sun February 12, 2017, musicians from India and abroad come together for the second edition of the Udaipur World Music Festival. Performances will be open air, beside the pretty Fateh Sagar Lake, and at Gandhi Ground, 2km away.

The festival curates an eclectic line-up, which is still being finalised. Swiss-Cuban violinist and singer Yilian Cañizares will play Afro-Cuban rhythms. Alongside are Indian classical fusion band Advaita; musical duo Niyaz that blends Sufi music with electronic sounds, and the London Community Gospel Choir that fuses gospel music with jazz and reggae.

The city itself is a delicate beauty, dotted with havelis, fairytale palaces and rippling lakes. While in Udaipur, visit the gorgeous City Palace and Fort,  and walk the streets around the palace complex to browse stores selling jewellery and miniature Mughal paintings. More ideas in our guide to Udaipur. Extend your trip by stopping by Kumbhalgarh, home to the great wall of India, 80km from Udaipur. Alternatively, the hills around the village of Jawai Bandh are prime leopard territory; the hills are 165km from the city. For more getaways in the state, see here.
